Every Saturday morning, a special football community comes together at Balmain & District Football Club (BDFC). Players aged from 5 to 23 pull on their boots, join their teammates and enjoy the skills, friendships and sense of achievement that come from being part of a club.
The BDFC All Abilities program was founded in 2014 through a partnership between the club and broadcaster and long-time community advocate Ellen Fanning. Its purpose was simple but important: to make football accessible to players of all abilities. More than a decade later, it has become an integral part of both BDFC and the wider community.
Each session combines football development with fun and inclusion. Players take part in activities designed to build coordination, confidence, teamwork and fundamental football skills. Coaches and volunteer Buddies tailor their support to the individual, helping every player participate, progress and enjoy being on the field. The morning culminates in a game, giving players the chance to put their skills into practice and experience the excitement of playing as part of a team.
The Buddies are central to the program. They encourage and assist players during training and matches, helping create an environment in which every player feels welcome and valued. BDFC Premier League players, including Maisie Tanner and Christian White, volunteer their time, providing positive role models and connecting All Abilities participants with the wider club.
The program also extends beyond its regular Saturday sessions. Matches with Marrickville Football Club and participation in Football NSW Football4all Gala Days give players the opportunity to face new opposition, meet other footballers and proudly represent Balmain.
For parents and carers, Saturday mornings offer both a welcome break and an important social connection. Families share experiences, exchange advice and learn from others who may be navigating similar challenges.
Above all, BDFC All Abilities gives its participants first — to wear the club kit, join a team, develop their skills, celebrate their achievements and experience the pride of belonging. It is much more than a weekly football session, it is a community built around friendship, family support and genuine inclusion.
