5 minutes over coffee, Bryan Brown

With a list of accolades and achievements that could stretch the length of Darling Street, we chat with beloved Aussie actor, producer, and author Bryan Brown. The founder of production company New Town Films is not only a triple threat, he is also a local legend and an all-round nice guy.

When did you move to Balmain?
Why here?
Where else would you want to live?
Balmain has lots of great old houses, it is close to the city, and you have the harbour and ferries on your doorstep.
What’s changed in the area since you arrived?
There is no more Ralph’s Deli.
Anything that has stayed the same over your 26 years?
The village feel hasn’t changed and the laid-back attitude is still the same.
What do you love most about Balmain?
There are always loads of people around to chat to and the shop staff have a great attitude.
Favourite peninsula spot?
I have to say Bertoni. And saying that will get me a free coffee.
Do you have a proudest moment?
I am grateful for every experience I have had, but working with the mountain gorillas in Rwanda for Gorillas in the Mist with Sigourney Weaver was a big high.
One piece of unsolicited advice you would offer locals.
To be honest, I don’t think they need my advice – they all know what they are doing. Maybe take an evening ferry ride to anywhere.
Would you consider writing Balmain into the backdrop in any of your future projects?
I actually shot on location in Balmain 40 years ago together with Judy Davis for Winter of Our Dreams. I would love to do it again.
Finally, how do you like your coffee?
A large latte thanks served in a big cup.
