Food, glorious food

Having food on the table and people that care is a basic need that some might take for granted. But what happens when these needs aren’t met? Darling speaks to the team at Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre.

The Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre empowers connections and wellbeing within our community. For them, it’s that simple. A huge part of what they do is supporting people with daily challenges - and providing food is a critical service they provide to the community.

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a big difference to someone’s day - like a fresh loaf of bread or some tasty, nourishing food. Thanks to their army of amazing volunteers, and the support of some fantastic local businesses and organisations, Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre are able to run a Pop- Up Pantry, provide weekly meal deliveries and host the famous neighbourhood Breadnesday!

These services are available to all members of the community, whether they need something extra to get through the week, or want an excuse to get out and meet more people in the area - this is a community, so whatever someone’s reason or need is, Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre has made them available.

What started as a social, local neighbourhood ‘market’ with a difference, has now grown into a service where anyone is welcome to help themselves to fresh fruit and vegetables, groceries and dry food staples. Grab a box or bag, browse the stalls and take what you need - no questions asked and no payment required. Pop-Up Pantry is available every second Friday from 12:30pm - 2.00pm.

“Absolutely anyone in our local community is welcome to put their hand up for a hot            meal or come along to our hub, take what you need and enjoy a cup of coffee and a            chat with our team,” says Steven, CEO of Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre

Every Wednesday, without fail, the centre’s ‘Breadnesday’ stall is out the front. Pick up a loaf of fresh bread from 10am to 12pm. Sometimes there are even some groceries or fresh
herbs as a little something extra to brighten up your day. And when they say fresh bread, they mean it! The wonderful Gift of Bread, Paddy the Baker and Victoire, donate their tasty, handmade bread every week.

“Our goal is to create a space that gives dignity back to providing food relief for people who may be having a rough time. No judgement, just                  positive human connection and a way to reconnect our local community”, says Marco, Social Enterprise Manager

Every week, 20 for 1, in partnership with Vinnies Rozelle, delivers over 280 meals. Every day, nutritious meals, food hampers and snacks are packed and delivered by a group of legendary volunteers to members of the community in need of kindness and support.

20 for 1 volunteer Jayne says, “My partner and I joined as volunteers because we wanted to give back to the community. Being part of the meal prep team gives us the flexibility to support as and when we can, and it’s a fun activity to do together. It’s such a great group, and the team makes it seamless and easy to get involved.”

These meal deliveries wouldn’t be possible without the support of many organisations. Restaurants, cafes and home cooks make the delicious meals while OzHarvest and local businesses supply food for the hampers. Additional items are bought and subsidised by the Food Bank.

Would a hot meal delivered to you every week make a positive difference?
