Local, award winning web series amazing Grace follows young Grace (played by Grace herself) through daily life without her Dad, reflecting her real experiences of seeking her Dad’s advice in life’s critical moments. This is Grace’s story.
Hi, my name is Grace, I’m 18 and I’ve been lucky enough to live in Balmain all my life. The support of this community has seen me through almost everything. When I was 10 my Dad died, suddenly, and it turned my life upside down; from having Dad always present, a person who I relied on and confided in, to never being able to hug him or talk to him again. Soon after Dad died, I started losing memories of him, and I was terrified. When I eventually found the courage to tell my Mum, we knew we had to do something to keep my Dad’s memory alive. So, we made a web series. As unusual as that might sound, it was the best thing Mum and I could think to do, given my Mum’s experience as a TV and film director/producer and my Dad’s work in the industry as a prolific screenwriter and actor.
We started working on the series on Father’s Day in 2015 and we have been filming the series since 2016. In the series I play Grace, a fictionalised version of me, and in each episode, I encounter a problem. To help me overcome these problems, I imagine my Dad and the story he would tell me, one of his real stories.
The character of my Dad is played by Ben Wood, and Justine Clarke plays my Mum. The series has developed as I’ve grown up, and we’ve produced 14 episodes so far covering topics such as bullying, appearance and body image, assessments and dealing with Father’s Day without my Dad. The series is ultimately about finding your own way in the world and being able to laugh even when things get tough.
The project has helped me deal with my grief and stay connected to my Dad, and this has only been made possible by the support of the Balmain community. Local shops have let us use their stores for filming, local businesses have financially sponsored our production and Balmain residents have turned up early in the morning to be extras in the show. We have filmed in a range of Balmain locations and some of our favourites have been the Birchgrove Oval and Jetty, Mort Bay Park, and Darling Street.
All the episodes are available for free to view online. Since the series is a legacy to Dad it seemed only right that the series be made available to anyone anywhere to watch and enjoy. The videos are on our Facebook page, our YouTube channel and website.
