Overuse injuries are caused by repetitive trauma on the joint or muscle. And the more active you are, the more prone you are to these injuries, especially as you get older.
Brendan, Clinical Director and Principal Physiotherapist at Redo Health, explains that getting your injury assessed is important. “By diagnosing the injury, we can identify the appropriate treatment. You may need a massage or exercises to help restore your and rebuild strength.”
Once the pain subsides it’s tempting to go back to your old exercise habits, but Brendan says that pacing yourself is key to staying injury free. “The pain may be gone, but this doesn’t mean you’re moving as well as you did before your injury. The human body is good at compensating, but after a certain point your body loses its options for good movement and the injury will return.”
If you suffer from recurring episodes of pain, you perhaps haven’t fully restored your mobility and strength. This is where a Physiotherapist can help repair your body by refining your movement.
